tummy touch has been defying convention, resisting categorisation
and generally causing a scene for over ten years now. maverick a&r
recluse, tim 'love' lee has wrestled 15 startling musical moments
into one cohesive and compelling whole. touch tones is the music
you didn't know you couldn't live without until today.
compiled from a mix of old friends (mescalito, crazy girl,
guessmen), more recent tummy touch artists (zook, niyi), and
complete strangers pulled from the demo box over the last few
years, you would've thought it difficult to find the common ground
between them. but its simply not the case, "they all have a sense
of humour and soul" explains tim, "it'll take balls of steel to
buy a compilation like this."
he's right. from the first listen, ears are bombarded with a host
of different sounds, but a real gem of a compilation, you'd never
believe tummy touch the label happened almost completely by
accident?
a bored house dj, tim dreamt of parties with music as quirky as
what he was making in his home studio rocking the dance floor.
after joining forces with nottingham's best underground beats
posse the phat wax crew ... read more » and avant-garde hosts
brain ticket, the first tummy touch party was born. kicking off at
a small nightclub in the middle of nottingham's all night fruit
market in june 1994, a dozen outrageous parties followed,
extending to his warehouse hangout and illegal venues in
shoreditch with like-minded west london party posse, boomba makao?
at the same time tim ran his own early 'peace feast' label, with
long-time friend and temporary label manager tony global who had
promised to do two tracks of low down & dirty, far-out funk for
release. but due to the ridiculous working practices of mr lee,
the first time tim heard the tracks was at the mastering studio on
the day of the cut. imagine tim's confusion as he listened to two
up-tempo, discofied, balearic floor fillers! 'peace feast' had
prided itself on providing the most difficult to play dance music
around, but this was far too accessible. after toying with the
idea of cutting it at the wrong speed, tim decided that forming a
new record label was the better plan. naming the label, which was
to provide an outlet for party music, after the legendary parties
tim often threw.
and the party is set to continue. uprooting and now directing
operations from new york, who knows what influence the nyc party
will have. "to be honest, most of this compilation was put
together while tt was still based in london but we've signed our
first us acts this year so expect stuff from there early next
year."
more? at this rate we could be talking 'now twicm #647' as tim
says, "only when i stop discovering excellent new music i'll stop
putting these out". if anything only one thing is certain, touch
tones 3 is the best compilation yet. until the next one that is?
